Divisions
The Department of Basic Sciences started its function in 1985, followed by the election and the assumption of duties of the first five faculty members in November 1984.
The coming years were devoted to the training of the students, to the successful claiming of competitive funding for establishing basic laboratory infrastructure and to the development of the first research laboratories of Biology, Biochemistry Pharmacology and Physiology. During the following years young competitive faculty members have been recruited in various academic positions and fulfilled major contribution to the organization and development of the department.
Until 1991, the department has been housed in two of the wings in the Knossos University Campus. In 1992 the department moved to the new Medical School buildings in the Campus in Voutes. New laboratories have been set up, the basic infrastructure has been expanded and very important and highly competitive research projects started. At the same time, high-level graduate programs covering the scientific fields of the faculty members of the department have been funded. The standards of pre-graduate and graduate training at the department have been kept on high levels.
The Department of Morphology includes the Laboratories of:
- Anatomy-Histology-Embryology,
- Pathology
- (Histopathology, Cytology, Electronic Microscopy, Immunohistology)
- Forensic Science & Toxicology
- (Toxicology & Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Science)
The Department consists of 9 faculty members that participate intensively in the whole spectrum of academic (pre- and postgraduate) and clinical activities. During the last 20 years the Dept is growing remarkably. The continuing efforts for high level medical education and research shape the coreof our common academic values. This has resulted in significant academic achievements of our faculty members as it is obviously determined by their publications citations and other academic distinctions as well. Being focused on the aforementioned values we aim over time on the scientific excellence. We consider that is the most efficient way to offer our students a high quality armamentarium in an international competitive scientific environment and high level medical service to community.
The Division of Radiology consists of 4 departments (laboratories) dedicated to excellence in education and research:
- Medical Physics
- Medical Imaging
- Radiation Oncology
- Nuclear Medicine
We train tomorrow’s leaders in medical physics, medical imaging and radiotherapy to positively affect the lives of patients. At this website, you can find information about educational and research activities/interests of Radiology Division faculty members.
In addition to providing patient care at the University Hospital of Iraklion, the Division of Radiology has a major research portfolio and also teaches the principles and practice of Medical Physics, Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine to undergraduate medical students and residents during their clinical training. Moreover, our infrastructure provides an outstanding environment for research leading to a doctorate degree. The department of Medical Physics also offers a joint postgraduate program leading to the degree of Master of Science in Medical Radiation Physics.
